Malaysia Needs 100,000 More Engineers to Accelerate National Development
KUALA LUMPUR, 20 August 2025 — Malaysia is short of about 100,000 engineers needed to support the country’s development, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
Malaysia Needs 100,000 More Engineers to Accelerate National Development
Currently, Malaysia has around 200,000 registered engineers, but this is still below the ideal ratio of one engineer for every 100 people. According to the Works Minister, closing this gap is important to keep up with infrastructure projects and industrial growth.
Training More Through TVET
To solve this issue, the government is expanding Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The goal is to have 60,000 new students trained in technical and engineering fields. This will help supply more skilled workers to the job market.
Keeping Graduates in Engineering
Another challenge is that many engineering graduates move to other fields that offer higher pay. The Works Ministry plans to make engineering jobs more attractive with better career paths, salaries, and support.
Why It Matters
For Businesses: Companies in construction, manufacturing, and technology may face delays if they can’t hire enough engineers.
For Job Seekers: Engineering is now one of the most in-demand careers in Malaysia. Fresh graduates and TVET students have strong opportunities ahead.
For Schools & Training Centres: Education providers can play a big role by offering programmes that match industry needs.
